Host Testimonials

I am so thankful for the partnership between YMCA International Services and “Job Search 101”. In the past year, hundreds of refugees have benefited from classes focusing on how to fill out a job application and how to interview. Newcomers to Houston are resettling from various countries, like Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma, Somalia, Eritrea, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cuba. The job search culture is substantially different in these countries and the JS 101 instructor has taken time to specifically tailor the six hour class to the needs of refugee job seekers. This class has a simple yet important mission: to prepare refugees to compete for jobs effectively. Classes are offered in English and Spanish each month with excellent reviews. One refugee said,” This interview and resume workshop was outstanding. The teacher gave (clear) guidelines and is well experienced.” While another raved about the instructor, “Very good presentation and good communication skills. I really recommend this class to other refugees.

Refugees benefit immeasurably from learning basic job search skills in their new homeland through our rewarding partnership with” Job Search 101”. We can’t thank the program enough and hope it continues for years to come.

I would like to express my deep gratitude for those responsible for providing Star of Hope with the expertise and encouragement we have found in “Job Search 101”. In the year the Men’s Development Center has been fortunate to host “Job Search 101”, our men have had their sights lifted and their hearts bolstered significantly. This four session class has a simple yet profound mission: to set men on a pathway by which they will find success in obtaining gainful employment. For multitudes of our men, that very notion has become a hopeless quest. However, as our Career Center Coordinator, Kirk McMillan, testifies, “The class has raised the number of jobs the men have received this year. This program has been a Godsend. The men in ‘Job Search 101’ have nothing but praise for the instructors and the instruction given to them.”

Our hope is that Star of Hope will continue for years to come to benefit from the gifts and efforts of those reaching out to our men through “Job Search 101”.

I would like to thank you for all of your support.   Your classes have greatly enriched our vocational programming.   In addition to the women coming away with job search tools, your classes have bolstered the women's self-esteem.  You echoed our message to them to recognize the gifts and talents they offer an employer and to dream big.

Thank you for the gift of your time and expertise and as importantly, your passion for this work...

See you next year!
